  • Local cats

Local cats sometimes wander into the Zoo, and although they may feel at home here, it isn’t the safest place for them to hang out, and they also pose a significant risk to Zoo animals.

We are working towards a cat-proof fence to help with this issue, but in the meantime, we would like to be able to quickly and safely return any wandering or escaped cats to their human companions. We recently reunited a cat with his family in Grey Lynn – he had been missing for three years!

If you have a companion cat at home, or even if you just feed a stray visitor, we would be grateful if you could send in your details or any information that will help us identify neighbourhood cats. With this help, we can speed up the process of returning your cat to you if they find their way into the Zoo.

Thank you for your assistance and for making our local community a safer place for all animals.

  • What happens if a cat is on Zoo grounds

Sometimes a cat turns up unwell or injured, or may be seen wandering in an unsafe or undesirable area. If we have record of who owns the cat, we can just call them and let them know / ask them to collect their cat. Otherwise, we need to try and catch the cat, to assess its wellbeing and check it for a microchip, to try to locate an owner. Sometimes we catch a cat other than the one we have seen, and then need to determine whether the cat has a home. By law we can’t release / abandon a cat once we have it in our possession and so need to go through a lengthy process to try and track down an owner, if the cat doesn’t have a registered microchip. During this process that cat is well cared for, and if after a week we have not managed to find an owner, it is handed over to an approved foster / adoption partner for rehoming.
